BUILT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

There’s a lot of mass-produced furniture today that’s not built for a second life. It is not structurally sound enough to reupholster or invest in. The lifespan of an average sofa being produced in today’s economy is just 6 years. That means sofas are either not built to last anymore, or people simply are throwing their old ones out.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Furniture designed for future generations is at the heart of Fleming & Howland’s circular economy. The Circular Outlet by Fleming & Howland invites you to shop ex-display, reupholstered and reconditioned items by becoming an important part of their sustainability programme.

“Style is about quality, integrity and timelessness.
It is free of trends but always feels fresh and new.”

INNOVATION & RESEARCH

Fleming & Howland is part of an innovation programme that researches the reasons why people replace or dispose of their sofa. Reasons include long-term wear and tear, structural failure within the furniture joint, functionality and moving home. Data is then used to research the materials with longest lifespan with least environmental impact as well as further technical improvements on product development. As furniture is made exclusively to order, this is one of the reasons why such a small company is able to offer such a large selection of upholstered furniture and remain true to their philosophy.

A CHAIR IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE MATERIALS IT IS MADE FROM

Other factors include the reduction of waste and implementing new eco-friendly materials suitable for reupholstery, prototyping and validating. This never-ending process enables constant changes to production lines, manufacturing, and circularity processes in order to extend the lifespan of each piece of furniture that leaves the workshop, be it leather, velvet, wool, or linen. This quality is reflected in the many stories Fleming & Howland customers have to tell. From hotels, restaurants, and showrooms to homes and bars, Fleming & Howland furniture exudes the inherent properties of timeless history and unique experiences.

LEATHER COLOURED BY HAND

To be true to the original 18th-century design and to ensure a prolonged life, choose a hand-coloured leather finish. This not only creates an almost 3-dimensional patina, but it allows the piece to be constantly reconditioned. An investment into such an ancient art will make you secure in the knowledge an object can last much longer than you could have ever imagined.
